What Does Truth For Life Believe?
We accept the Scriptures as our only authority in matters of faith and practice, and our interpretation of Bible doctrine leads us to believe: The Scriptures of the Old & New Testament as being verbally inspired by God and inerrant and infallible in the original writings, and that they are of supreme and final authority. If I’ve never listened to Bible teaching before, where should I start?
If you’re new to learning from the Bible, or new to Christianity, we have a few series that we highly recommend as a starting point. These are some great studies that will provide you with a firm foundation in Christian basics.
Do I need a Bible?
We recommend that you follow along with the teaching using a Bible. The Bible comes in many translation versions. Alistair teaches from the English Standard Version, also known as the ESV. The website and app both include the ESV for your convenience.
If you don’t have a hard copy Bible, you can easily download an English Standard Version (ESV) to your mobile phone or iPad by searching ‘ESV Bible’ in your app store. Most are free.
If I want to begin reading the Bible on my own, do I start on page one?
If you’ve never read the Bible before, we recommend you start by reading one of the Gospels. There are four Gospels in total, and you can find them at the very beginning of the second half of the Bible, called the New Testament. Each of the four Gospels was written by a different author—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and each contains the author’s written historical record of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. You’ll find many similar accounts in each of the Gospels, mainly because they record the same events, however, each Gospel is told from a different author’s perspective.
Why begin with the Gospels?
Because the Bible is a book about Jesus. When you understand who Jesus is and why He came, you’ll be able to read the Old Testament as it points forward to Him, and the New Testament (beginning in the book of Acts) as it further reveals Him.
