Hymn: "Consider It Joy" by Graham Kendrick

    By: Graham Kendrick

    Though trials will come
    Don't fear, don't run
    Lift up your eyes
    Hold fast, be strong
    Have faith, keep on believing
    Lift up your eyes
    For God is at work in us
    Moulding and shaping us
    Out of his love for us
    Making us more like Jesus

    Even as a prisoner, the Apostle Paul remained confident about his direction and purpose in life: “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” When pride and jealousy fostered division among the Philippian Christians, then, Paul redirected their focus to Jesus, the supreme example of sacrificial love. Passionate that all should share in God’s grace, he also provided principles to guide the Church in all generations as we set our sights on Him.

    Explore the History and Efficacy of the Bible

    There is a war raging around us—in society, in our churches, and in our homes. It is not merely a battle over cultural issues like marriage, race, or the sexual revolution. Rather, it is a spiritual battle for the truth.

    Is God real? Does He speak? And if so, how would we know?

    Hymn: "A Debtor to Mercy Alone" By Augustus M. Toplady

    A Debtor to Mercy Alone
    By: Augustus M. Toplady

    A debtor to mercy alone, of covenant mercy I sing;
    Nor fear, with Thy righteousness on, my person and off’ring to bring.
    The terrors of law and of God with me can have nothing to do;
    My Savior’s obedience and blood hide all my transgressions from view.

    Video: "Trusting God in the Dark" by Alistair Begg

    Everyone experiences disappointment or sadness to some degree. In Psalm 13, David demonstrated what it means to trust God in tough times. Feeling forgotten, forsaken, sorrowful, and subdued, David cried out for God’s consideration and illumination. As he prayed, his perspective changed, and he was able to rejoice—even though his circumstances remained the same. Alistair Begg teaches that when we face difficult times, we must resist self-pity, trusting that God knows what’s best for us and can use even our hard experiences for good.

    Few passages from Scripture are as widely read—or as frequently misunderstood—as Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Over the centuries, believers and unbelievers alike have been stirred by Christ’s lessons on the Law of Love, the Golden Rule, forgiving one’s enemies, and bearing good fruit. But is the Sermon on the Mount really just a collection of inspiring moral teaching? Or does it offer us something even greater?

    Video: "Introducing 1 Samuel" by Alistair Begg

    As we launch a new study of 1 Samuel, we remember that although the book’s narrative took place thousands of years ago, it is included in the Bible for our instruction and encouragement. Beginning with barren, brokenhearted Hannah, this story introduces us to ordinary people with real aspirations, fears, and failures who are helpless and hopeless unless God does something. Alistair Begg reminds us that just as the word of God brought light and hope to Hannah’s life, it remains the answer to the crises we face today.

    Video: "A Journey to Jesus" by Alistair Begg

    The star of Bethlehem was more than a cosmic wonder; its presence compelled the magi to undertake a journey of eternal significance. Their destination, though, was not a place but a person. Just as the wise men knelt before the Savior, Alistair Begg reminds us that a genuine encounter with Jesus will result in praise and glory to the Father. God is seeking worshippers from all nations and will use any means—including the created order—to draw us to His Son.

    Alistair Begg Answers the Question "Do You Miss Scotland?"

    Dear Friend,

    “Do you miss Scotland?” is a question routinely posed to me, even though America has now been my home for the greater part of my life. My usual reply is “Yes,” and when pressed for an explanation, I mention that at certain times of the year I’m tempted to succumb to a wee dose of nostalgia. It usually lasts for all of 20 minutes! The transition period between Christmas and New Year’s is one of those times. New Year’s Eve (known as Hogmanay in Scotland) was the one day in the year when, as a boy, I was allowed to stay up late so that I could attend the ‘watchnight service’ with my father. It was always timed to end on the stroke of midnight as the church bells around the city heralded the beginning of the new year. Throughout the night, we visited friends and family in their homes and toasted the new beginning with shortbread and some kind of ginger cordial reserved for the occasion.

    A Prayer of Confession

    Even though God’s glory is evident throughout all of creation, He still stoops to love the weak and the broken. While He abounds in grace and gentle mercy toward us, though, we often neglect to extend that same care toward others. The following prayer, excerpted from this month’s featured resource, Streams of Mercy, helps us to confess our sinful attitudes toward those we are called to love:

    Need Help Putting Words to Your Prayers?

    In the first of his Ninety-Five Theses, Martin Luther wrote that the entire Christian life is to be one of repentance. Our fickle hearts, lusts, impatience in times of waiting, lack of humility, resistance to reconciliation, fear—God wants us to talk to Him often about our deepest needs! How do we respond to the Bible’s calls to confess our struggles with sin?
