Is Freedom from Addiction Possible?

This month, we’re offering a resource on a topic we don’t often cover at Truth For Life: addiction. This subject, though, is relevant to us all—even as Christians.

Addictions: A Banquet in the Grave; Finding Hope in the Power of the Gospel, written by pastor and longtime counselor Dr. Ed Welch, offers outstanding insights for those caught in the trap of addictive cravings, as well as for those trying to offer help to someone in a downward spiral of addiction.

You’ll likely come to this book with a specific role in mind. No matter what that role is, it’s important to recognize that our faith doesn’t guard us or our loved ones from the cycle of addiction, which begins with our wanting more. Left to run rampant, the pursuit of satisfying desire leaves us at the mercy of our obsessions—and when our obsession is anything other than Christ, we’re in trouble. Addiction, Dr. Welch suggests, is a worship disorder.

Scripture offers the teaching we need on the reckless nature of the human heart, as well as rich instruction on self-control. As Dr. Welch explores these topics, we discover that while his book primarily addresses addictive behaviors such as drug use and alcohol abuse, the basic ideas are relevant to all sins that are not easily cast off.

Today, it’s not uncommon for addiction to be classified as an illness or disease. But that limited definition rules out an important truth: addiction, at its root, is sin. Addictions: A Banquet in the Grave explores the relationship between why we succumb to our addictive desires and how getting our theology right can put us on the road to recovery.
