A Study in 1 Peter, Volume 4: Some Practical Exhortations
In his first epistle, Peter encouraged believers who were suffering persecution from a hostile culture. To stand firm, they would need to understand that their true security was in eternity, purchased for them by the blood of Christ. Christians are citizens of heaven, and they are aliens and strangers on the earth. When we learn to see things from this heavenly point of view, all that happens on earth takes on a different light.
Volume 1: Listen or Download
In volume one of this series, Alistair Begg reminds us of the heavenly hope that the Lord Jesus has obtained for us. We look forward to an eternal inheritance that cannot pass away, and so we need not despair when we experience loss, suffering, and persecution on earth. Walking in faith means looking to our Lord for comfort, obeying His commands, and growing in knowledge of the Word. As we understand who Jesus is and what He’s done for us, our lives will bear the fruit of that knowledge.
Volume 2: Listen or Download
In volume two of this series, Alistair Begg explains that although Christians live in the world, they do not fight with the weapons of the world. When faced with hostile authority, believers ought to follow the pattern of Christ and the apostles, who set an example of submission, obedience, and love. Whether in the household or the wider culture, following Christ means living by a standard the world does not recognize but that God honors.
Volume 3: Listen or Download
In volume three of this series, Alistair Begg reminds us that the righteous suffering we experience is the pattern of Christ. Jesus has secured a heavenly citizenship for us through the cross, and He has also taught us how to respond to persecution in the world. Depending on His work of atonement and following His example, we may demonstrate a persevering hope amidst suffering that testifies to the work of God in our lives.
Volume 4: Listen or Download
In volume four of this series, Alistair Begg expounds Peter’s intensely practical advice. A heavenly mindset not only equips believers for suffering but also prepares them to live within the framework of the church, submit to leadership with humility of heart, cast anxiety on the Lord, and resist the temptations of the Evil One. These are words of great encouragement to believers in any age.
