Dear Friend,
Today, I am reading Paul’s letter to Philemon, and I am challenged by his tone, especially as he is writing from prison! He informs Philemon that he is thankful for him and at the same time prayerful and joyful. It is clear that Paul is practicing what he preaches, having encouraged the Thessalonians to “be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances.”
The celebration of Thanksgiving provides us with an opportunity to remind ourselves that every good and perfect gift comes to us from our heavenly Father, who doesn’t change like shifting shadows. This year, some of our friends will be painfully aware of the absence of a loved one whom God has taken to Himself. Let us resolve to do our best in seeking to comfort and encourage them.
We also will do well to use the occasion to teach our children and grandchildren the importance of developing the attitude of gratitude. Books for children of all ages that teach about God's grace through the Lord Jesus will be a help to us all
In preparation for Christmas, I will be using my friend Sinclair Ferguson’s Advent devotional The Dawn of Redeeming Grace, first for myself, and then as a gift to give others. Christmas is an easy time to share materials that tell the Gospel message. Truth For Life: 365 Daily Devotions, Volume Two may be well received by your friends and relatives as a new year approaches. We make these, along with the books we’re recommending for children, available to you in the hope that they will enrich your family life as well as provide opportunities to introduce others to the greatest story ever told and the only answer to our broken world.
We have enjoyed visits from Truth For Life listeners from across the country during the summer months, and your letters and the assurance of your prayers humble us and put a spring in our step. May the joy of the Lord continue to be our strength as we serve Him together.
With my love in the Lord Jesus,
