Sermons on the Holy Spirit

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. — John 14:16—17 (ESV)

Jesus told His disciples that after He departed another would come—the Holy Spirit. Enabling us to bow to Scripture’s authority and not man’s, the Holy Spirit plays the central role in the conversion of unbelievers. Being theologically accurate is of no assistance if the Holy Spirit does not live inside us. In these sermons, Alistair Begg explains how the Holy Spirit works in a believer’s life.

For many, His work remains a mystery. And for some, it stirs up confusion and even controversy. As we look at John 16, we’ll be talking about the third person of the Trinity. This passage provides clarification on the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

At the start of the Acts we find the church at a critical point in its history. Jesus has been with the disciples, teaching them God’s truth and preparing them for their ministry. Now he has to leave them so that the next part of the plan for God’s kingdom can happen – the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Today’s study captures the fear and excitement of experiencing God’s outworking plan.

The Bible teaches that humanity is by nature alienated from God, and therefore sees Him as an enemy. What a miracle of grace, then, when He reveals Himself and draws us to saving faith! In this sermon, Alistair Begg focuses on what is uniquely true in the life of the believer. The critical distinction, we learn, is the presence of God’s Spirit within us, empowering us and reminding us that we belong to Christ.

Do Not Grieve the Holy Spirit of God (Ephesians 4:29-32)Listen (Free) | Download MP3 (Free)

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit indicates that a person has been sealed, forgiven, and redeemed in Christ, and because of this great work, Christians should not grieve the Holy Spirit. Alistair Begg emphasizes the importance of forsaking unrighteousness and, instead, emulating Christ in His kindness and forgiveness. Because Christ saved us from sin to do good works, the Christian Church should to be overflowing with kindness toward each another and toward the world.

Who Is the Holy Spirit? (John 16:5-16)Listen (Free) | Download MP3 (Free)

Many misconceptions and misunderstandings surround the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. In this message, Alistair Begg answers a simple but fundamental question: Who is this third person of the Trinity? Scripture teaches that the Holy Spirit is a unique person, not simply an influence or power. He is God, He is the author of truth and creator of all life, and He was given to God’s people so God’s world may be drawn to God’s Son.
