Is Singing Truly Essential in Church Worship?

Imagine a piece of candy, brightly wrapped, sitting unclaimed on a counter. We’d probably snatch up the treat, toss aside the cover, and indulge in a delight of sweetness. The wrapping compels the pursuit, but the inside contains the treasure.

In their book Sing!, Keith and Kristyn Getty suggest that when it comes to the role of singing in our worship, many of us have become contented to play with a wrapper rather than opening the gift of blessing God intends for us to receive.

Singing to God is what we’re created, commanded, and compelled to do. Christ-filled, Spirit-prompted singing changes our hearts and minds, and in turn can change our families—and even this world. Lyricists and worship leaders Keith and Kristyn Getty challenge us to sing to the Lord as they provide a treasure trove of lost principles rediscovered for a new generation of worshippers.

Whether used as part of a multi-week churchwide campaign on singing—perhaps in a Bible study or Sunday school—or read independently by church leaders, musicians, technicians, and choirs, this month’s resource will spark a new enthusiasm for congregational singing in the Church. Filled with practical insights and challenging discussion questions, Sing! encourages us to cultivate a culture of communal worship.
